I first announced that there would be a new issue of PUNK Magazine on April Fool’s Day, since we were planning it all the way back then, but I wasn’t sure if things could really come together or not. I’ve planned more than one “re-launch” that blew up on the launching pad. I’m happy to say that it now looks like things are going great! Here’s some of the stuff we’re working on for PUNK #23:
1.) Profiles of the six bands that will appear at the event at Tompkins Square Park on September 28. I think it’s important that people attend the event and support the bands (instead of doing some kind of bullshit “virtual” thing on the internet). This event will separate sheep from goats by having the bands compete for the live audience reactions: Live music the way it’s supposed to be! The bands will be doing their fucking best! So don’t miss it!
2.) An interesting story from back in the day by Bruce Carleton (PUNK Art Director emeritus) about the Misfits (where he ends up in jail after trashing a Chelsea Hotel room after a wild party!).
3.) A comic strip by the amazing Robert Romagnoli (the only person beside me who has contributed to every single issue of PUNK from the beginning), who seems to always have his finger on the pulse of the punk rock scene. Romagnoli’s work was always a fan favorite back in the day.
4.) Comic strips by Imari Azzizi, a French cartoonist Iggy Pop hired (and suggested would be good for PUNK Magazine). I’m always eager to publish comic strips by international cartoonists! And her stuff is spot on. We’ll be running a lot of comic strips in this issue with some top talent! (More details soon!)
5.) A new TOP 99 List! (Hey, if you have an idea or two for our favorite things in life, or if there’s just something you’d like to plug pass them on by leaving a comment on this SubStack newsletter!)
There’s going to be a lot more: great cartoonists, weirdness, and amazing advertisements! So stay tuned: Meanwhile, if you’re interested in helping make PUNK #23 happen and get involved in the new issue (and going forward, , send an email to:
Well, I just remember that when I went to the PUNK Magazine office (which was located at 225 Lafayette Street at the time: the same building where both MAD Magazine and The Realist were created) one day, you and our adorable friend Patricia didn't show up for work! And once you did show up, I thought you said you were both busted after an incident at the Chelsea Hotel... It was kind of eerily similar to the time you missed work after getting hit by a taxicab! Wow, those were the days, huh?
I actually wasn’t arrested after the Chelsea room trashing, despite my half-assed gesture in that direction. Glen and Jerry were, though. The whole sordid truth will be revealed in #23.
